General Motors and OnStar Face Five-Year Ban on Sharing Drivers' Geolocation and Behavior Data
Jan 17, 2025 4:24 AM

07:05 AM EST, 01/17/2025 (MT Newswires) -- General Motors ( GM ) and its subsidiary OnStar face a five-year ban from disclosing geolocation and driver behavior data to consumer reporting agencies over allegations of collecting, using, and selling the information without consent, the Federal Trade Commission said late Thursday.

Consumer reporting agencies can use data collected through GM's OnStar service and Smart Driver feature to set insurance rates.

Under the proposed order, General Motors ( GM ) and its subsidiaries must also provide "greater transparency and choice to consumers over the collection, use, and disclosure of their connected vehicle data," the FTC said. Such measures include obtaining consent before the collection of vehicle data as well as allowing consumers to delete and limit data gathered from their vehicles.

The FTC said the companies face a civil penalty of up to $51,744 for each violation.

General Motors ( GM ) did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
