General Motors' Cruise Unit Fined for Submitting False Report in Robotaxi Crash Probe
Nov 15, 2024 12:28 PM

08:00 AM EST, 11/15/2024 (MT Newswires) -- General Motors' ( GM ) self-driving car unit, Cruise, has admitted to providing a false record to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration regarding a crash involving one of its robotaxis and agreed to pay a $500,000 criminal fine to resolve the charge filed in federal court, the Justice Department said late Thursday.

The company also signed a three-year deferred prosecution agreement, under which Cruise must also cooperate with federal investigations, implement a safety compliance program, and submit yearly reports to the US Attorney's Office on implementation and remediation, the US Attorney's Office.

The report submitted by the company to the NHTSA described how a Cruise vehicle ran over a pedestrian in October 2023 but omitted the dragging of the pedestrian over 20 feet, which was shown in a video provided by Cruise employees, according to the statement.

General Motors ( GM ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
