01:44 PM EDT, 10/29/2025 (MT Newswires) -- General Motors ( GM ) will temporarily lay off about 5,500 workers across three US plants as it reassesses electric vehicle production following President Donald Trump's decision to eliminate federal tax credits for EV buyers, multiple media outlets reported Wednesday.
The cuts include 3,400 furloughed workers at the automaker's Factory Zero plant in Detroit, where the electric Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra and Hummer EV are built, according to Bloomberg. About 1,200 are expected to return in January while 2,200 will remain on indefinite furlough, the report said.
Reuters said the company will pause battery cell production for about six months starting in January at its joint-venture plants in Tennessee and Ohio, temporarily laying off about 1,550 workers and indefinitely cutting an additional 550 at the Ohio facility.
General Motors ( GM ) didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
