01:53 PM EDT, 07/02/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOG) Google ( GOOG ) said Tuesday its greenhouse gas emissions in 2023 rose 13% year over year mainly due to increased data center energy consumption and supply chain emissions.
The 14.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2023 was also a 48% increase compared with the 2019 target base year.
The company said it is advancing climate action through AI in the areas of organizing information, improving prediction and better optimization.
"While we advanced clean energy on many of the grids where we operate, there are still some hard-to-decarbonize regions like Asia Pacific where [carbon-free energy] isn't readily available," Google ( GOOG ) said.
