06:23 AM EDT, 10/10/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) has met the legal tests to be designated with strategic market status in general search and search advertising services, but the status is "not a finding of wrongdoing," and no immediate measures are required, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority said Friday.
It added that the tech giant has "substantial and entrenched market power" in general search and search advertising, although Google's ( GOOG ) Gemini AI assistant is not included in the scope of the determination.
The regulator said it intends to start consulting on possible interventions later in 2025 so that general search services are open to "effective" competition, and users have the confidence that they are "treated fairly."
The CMA launched a probe into the tech giant's general search and search advertising services on Jan. 14.
Google ( GOOG ) said in a blog post that UK users are among the first to benefit from the tech giant's services, and that the UK often has access to Google's ( GOOG ) products and services before other nations The company expects to receive new requirements and regulations related to Search.
