Gorilla Glass is a brand of specialized toughened glass developed and manufactured by Corning. This glass is now in its sixth generation and is designed to be thin and damage-resistant. Gorilla Glass is unique to Corning, but its close equivalents do exist including Asahi Glass Company, Dragontrail and Schott AG Xensation. However, what makes Gorilla Glass special is the fact that every time a new smartphone is being launched and especially a flagship, the smartphone makers literally brag about the fact that there is a Corning Gorilla Glass used in their device.
This company claims that Gorilla Glass has been installed on 6 billion devices world-wide since its debut in 2007 and more than 45 brands use the glass on their device. The brand is truly a 'gentle giant'.
Storyboard caught up with John Bayne, Vice President and General Manager at Corning Gorilla Glass, Corning Specialty Materials on the sidelines of the launch of Gorilla Glass 6 in Sunnyvale California and spoke to him about potential of Indian smartphone market for a company like Corning and what makes Gorilla Glass so elusive.
