Hartford Financial Unit Correct in Terminating Former Employee's Long-term Disability Benefits, Court Says
Aug 29, 2024 4:37 AM

01:00 PM EDT, 08/27/2024 (MT Newswires) -- A Hartford Financial Services Group ( HIG ) unit was correct in terminating a former employee's long-term disability benefits after following due process, a US District Court judge said in an opinion published Monday.

A customer service engineer had filed a lawsuit against Hartford Life & Accident Insurance alleging the company had improperly terminated payments based on its investigation.

That investigation found that the ex-employee was able to perform physical activities despite making statements to the contrary and the company decided to cut the payments which it had been making on and off since 2008.

The former employee challenged the decision and alleged the company discounted his subjective complaints of pain that were caused by a torn rotator cuff.

But Judge Brendan Hurson of the US District Court for the District of Maryland said the insurer did not abuse its discretion and properly terminated the customer service engineer's long-term disability benefits.

Bloomberg earlier reported the story.
