How to be a good manager? Take tips from RPG Group chairman Harsh Goenka

As they say rightly, many of us can become bosses but only a handful of bosses are actually good leaders. So what is the key to becoming a good leader? Well, what better advice than the one that is becoming from one of the most successful leaders?

Harsh Goenka, chairman of RPG Group, one of India's largest conglomerates, has shared some management tips that one might want to consider to become a good leader.

The 61-year-old shared the tips on Twitter as follows:

Inspire and influence rather than control.

Be excited about great challenges.

Create an environment where people can freely ask questions and give suggestions.

Align responsibilities with managers strengths.

Goenka is a leading figure in the country’s business circles. Goenka, who took over the chairmanship of the conglomerate back in 1988, has played a crucial role in the progress of the group that is currently valued over $1.4 billion.

The Mumbai-based RPG Group, which was founded in 1979 by RP Goenka, the father of Harsh Goenka, currently comprises more than 15 companies in the areas including infrastructure, tyres, technology and speciality.

CEAT Tyres, IT firm Zensar Technologies, KEC International, RPG Life Sciences, energy products firm Raychem RPG and plantation company Harrisons Malayalam are some of its companies. The revenue of the group stood at Rs 23, 500 crore for the financial year 2017-18.

Goenka, who is an alumnus of St Xavier’s College, Kolkata and International Institute for Management Development, Switzerland, has been known for his open-mindedness towards change. He has been quite open about the need for accepting digital technology without which, he believes institutions will have no option but to perish.
