The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has given green signal to the Income tax department to probe purchases from Nirav Modi stores since 2015, reported The Economic Times.
The report said that the investigation will be based on a list detailed in a confidential document prepared by Income Tax department. It includes details about the total amount of gems and jewellery purchased by an individual and the mode of payment, the report said.
According to the report, the Delhi office of Income Tax (Investigation) received a list of 55 entities from Mumbai. The buyers are divided into three categories, i.e. those who purchased for an amount of over Rs 5 crore, those who purchased for an amount ranging between Rs 1 crore and Rs 5 crore and those whose purchase was below Rs 1 crore.
It is claimed that several prominent persons have now come under scanner for their cash purchases. As per the report, Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi’s wife Anita figured was issued a notice about two months ago after her name too came up.
With Nirav Modi, the centre figure in the Rs 13,000 crore PNB scam still absconding, the Income Tax department is likely to dig deeper into the activities of the top buyers including their I-T returns during the period.
