10:30 AM EST, 03/07/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Independent testing laboratory Valisure said Wednesday that tests it has conducted showed that a human carcinogen called benzene can form in benzoyl peroxide in certain acne treatment products.
Valisure said it filed a citizen petition with the US Food and Drug Administration asking the regulator to investigate, recall and suspend sales of acne treatments containing benzoyl peroxide.
Benzene was detected in some acne treatments from Estee Lauder's ( EL ) Clinique, Target's ( TGT ) Up & Up, Walmart's ( WMT ) Equate Beauty acne cream and Walgreens Boots Alliance's ( WBA ) acne soap bar, Reuters reported, citing Valisure.
"We are reviewing Valisure's citizen petition," Walgreens told MT Newswires. "We work with our suppliers to follow FDA regulations and guidelines for Walgreens branded products."
The FDA, Estee Lauder ( EL ), Walmart ( WMT ) and Target ( TGT ) didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
