Indian carriers increase baggage charges to counter fuel price hike, says report
Jun 26, 2018 8:54 AM

Carriers operating in India’s aviation sector have increased charges on check-in baggage, reported The Economic Times. The increase comes after jet fuel prices saw a 40% increase since January 2017 forcing carriers hike fares and other charges.

According to the report, carriers such as IndiGo, SpiceJet and GoAir will now charge Rs 400 per kilogram for baggage that is above the 15 kilogram mark.

This, as per the report is a clear increase from the earlier practice, when the charge drawn for additional weight was just Rs 300 per kilogram.

In addition, the report added that when it comes to pre-booking, both GoAir and IndiGo will now charge ‘Rs 1,900 for excess baggage of 5 kg, Rs 3,800 for extra 10 kg, Rs 5,700 for 15 kg extra and 11,400 for extra 30 kg.’

Jet Airways, on the other hand increased excess baggage cost from Rs 400 to Rs 500 per kilogram.

Besides, passengers will also now have to pay an additional charge of Rs 3,999, when carrying an additional back on domestic flights, the report said.

Other carriers too have followed the same path with Air India, which allows passengers to carry up to 25 kg baggage free, raising excess baggage charges from Rs 400 per kg to Rs 500 earlier in the month.
