IndiGo is in talks to place a 'large' plane order with Airbus, Ronojoy Dutta, the CEO of India's largest domestic carrier, has told Bloomberg.
Dutta, who took charge as CEO of InterGlobe Aviation's IndiGo in January, said the airline is in discussion with the French planemaker to buy long-range versions of Airbus' newest narrow-body jets.
Dutta said the domestic carrier is considering buying Airbus' long-distance A321neo LR and the yet-to-be-released A321 XLR planes.
IndiGo CEO did not specify the size of the new deal but remarked that it will be "in bulk".
“When we order, we’ll order in bulk for sure,” Dutta told Bloomberg. “I can’t give you a tentative number, but it will be large. We need longer range."
Previously, IndiGo had ordered 430 jets in the A320neo family, additional to an earlier order of 100 older A320 models, making the airline one of the biggest buyers of the French planemaker's best-selling plane, the report said.
In April, the airline said that it will add about 50 aircraft from the debt-ridden Jet Airways' fleet after it shut down its operations.
IndiGo had a market share of 46.9 percent in March 2019.
Currently, the low-cost carrier has about 222 aircraft in its fleet, flying to 70 destinations which include 53 domestic and 17 international.
