07:50 AM EST, 12/13/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Intel ( INTC ) executives said Thursday at an investment banking conference in San Francisco that it is possible to spin off the company's manufacturing business, depending on the success of a new chipmaking technology slated for next year, according to a conference transcript.
When asked whether the success of the 18A technology that's scheduled for next year would dictate whether the company continues combining design and manufacturing, Intel ( INTC ) interim Co-CEO Michelle Johnston Holthaus said that it is key to putting Intel's ( INTC ) foundries back on track.
"Pragmatically, do I think it makes sense that they're completely separated and there's no tie?" Holthaus said of their product and manufacturing units. "I don't think so. But someone will decide that."
Interim Co-CEO and CFO David Zinsner added that Intel ( INTC ) is already running the manufacturing business separately from Intel's ( INTC ) other operations, setting up a separate operational board and business process software system for the division.
"That's going to happen," Zinsner said. "Does it ever fully separate? I think that's an open question for another day."
