01:42 PM EDT, 04/26/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Over 140,000 taxpayers filed federal tax returns using Direct File, the Internal Revenue Service's new, free tax-filing pilot program, this season, the agency announced Friday.

Across the 12 pilot states, including Texas, Florida and New York, Taxpayers who used Direct File claimed more than $90 million in tax refunds and reported $35 million in tax balances due, according to the IRS.
