J.M. Smucker Tops Fiscal Second-Quarter Views, Raises Full-Year Outlook
Nov 26, 2024 10:10 AM

12:56 PM EST, 11/26/2024 (MT Newswires) -- J.M. Smucker (SJM) reported stronger-than-expected fiscal second-quarter results on Tuesday while raising its full-year earnings outlook.

Revenue increased to $2.27 billion for the three months ended Oct. 31 from $1.94 billion a year ago, above the average analyst estimate on FactSet of $2.26 billion. Adjusted earnings per share climbed to $2.76 from $2.59 and beat Wall Street's $2.50 view.

Comparable net sales increased 2%, which excludes the Hostess Brands acquisition and last year's divestitures.

The results reflected "sustained consumer demand" and disciplined cost management, Chief Executive Mark Smucker said in prepared remarks published on the company's website. Shares of J. M. Smucker ( SJM ) rose 4.7% in midday trade.

Sales strength in Uncrustables, Meow Mix, Cafe Bustelo, and Jif were partially offset by lower contract manufacturing sales related to the divested pet food portfolio and reduced sales for the Dunkin' brand, according to the consumer packaged goods company.

US retail coffee sales climbed to $704 million from $685.7 million. US retail frozen handheld and spreads sales rose 5% to $485.2 million. The company's Uncrustables frozen sandwiches grew net sales at the total company level by 16% and achieved record quarterly sales and household penetration, according to Mark Smucker.

"While we continue to operate in a dynamic consumer environment, our business remains resilient," he said. "And as industry volume growth has remained uncertain, our focused portfolio continues to deliver volume/mix growth."

For fiscal 2025, the food producer now expects adjusted EPS to range between $9.70 and $10.10, up from its prior guidance range of $9.60 to $10. The market view is for non-GAAP EPS of $9.81 in the ongoing year.

Management continues to project full-year sales growth of 8.5% to 9.5% over fiscal 2024's sales of $8.18 billion. The FactSet consensus is for sales of $8.89 billion in fiscal 2025.
