Keen to expand India presence; open to tie-up with Tatas: Liberty House
Oct 20, 2020 4:10 AM

Liberty House Group is keen to expand presence in the Indian steel market, Sanjeev Gupta, Chairman of Liberty House Group told CNBC-TV18.

He said the first kiln of Adhunik Metalik, which Liberty had recently acquired on its second attempt, has begun operations.

Gupta said Liberty’s first focus was to get the unit fully operation and hit one million tonnes of output.

“We want India to be a major hub for us. Now that we have made a start, we will naturally look to create a critical mass in the country,” he said.

“Our 3 main sectors are steel, aluminum and renewable power. We are open to opportunities in all 3. Right now we are pursuing opportunities in steel and renewable power,” he added.

On the Thyssenkrupp deal, Gupta said it would be concluded soon.

He further added that the Thyssenkrupp’s steel business has a capacity of more than 10 million tonne and that would double their European capacity if the businesses are merged.

“It would create a real champion. It is the second biggest in Europe, especially in automotive and packaging,” he said.

Gupta said he had high regard for the Tata Group and was open to any form of collaboration with them.

“We have a very high regard for Tata. As somebody of Indian origin, I have a great pride in what Tata is as a group, the values they hold. I am also a big fan of Ratan Tata. So, any cooperation with Tata is always very welcome for us and we will always keep that as priority,” he said.
