08:37 AM EDT, 03/23/2026 (MT Newswires) -- LaGuardia Airport was closed early Monday after an Air Canada Express regional jet struck an airport firefighting vehicle on the runway late Sunday, killing two pilots and injuring dozens, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
The Bombardier CRJ900, operated by Jazz Aviation as Flight AC8646 from Montreal, collided with the vehicle around 11:40 p.m. ET Sunday while rolling on Runway 4, the FAA said. Forty-one passengers, crew members, and two rescue officers were hospitalized, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop through Monday afternoon. More than 500 flights were canceled, WSJ reported.
National Transportation Safety Board investigators are working with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada to determine the cause. Air Canada and Jazz Aviation said teams are traveling to New York and will provide updates as the investigation continues.
