11:51 AM EDT, 09/18/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Lockheed Martin ( LMT ) said it has been awarded a contract by NASA to design and build the next-generation GeoXO Lightning Mapper instruments for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The baseline contract is valued at about $297 million for two instruments with options for two additional instruments, the firm said.

The Lightning Mapper is a single-channel, near-infrared optical instrument developed to detect, locate, and measure the intensity, duration and extent of lightning flashes in near-real-time, according to the release.
