Lufthansa raises ticket prices to meet environmental requirements
Jun 25, 2024 3:19 AM

(Reuters) -Lufthansa will increase ticket prices on all flights departing from EU countries, Britain, Norway and Switzerland by between 1 euro and 72 euros($1.07-$77.24) as environmental costs rise, the company said on Tuesday.

The airline said the surcharge will "cover part of the steadily rising additional costs due to regulatory environmental requirements" such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) made from bio-based materials and regarded as crucial to making flying more sustainable.

The European Union has adopted rules requiring flights departing from member states' airports to carry progressively increasing amounts of SAF.

Lufthansa added that it will not be able to bear additional costs resulting from regulatory requirements in the next years.

The price hike, which the airline called an "Environmental Cost Surcharge" will cover part of these costs for 2025, it said.

($1 = 0.9321 euros)
