Madras High Court dismisses petitions challenging building memorials at Marina
Aug 8, 2018 12:02 AM

Madras High Court on Wednesday dismissed petitions in 2017 challenging the construction of memorials in Marina in Chennai.

The court held a special sitting to hear DMK plea to allot space on the Marina beach for the burial of party leader M Karunanidhi.

The state government has filed a counter affidavit in the matter, reported The Hindu, The Madras HC directed the counsel of Traffic Ramaswamy, one of the petitioners challenging the construction, to file a memo that he has no objection to bury the mortal remains of Karunanidhi at the Marina, the report said.

The Madras HC kicked off the proceedings by dictating the orders in DMK’s petition. The court decided to dictate the facts first before hearing the counsels and pronouncing their decision, the report said.

The DMK moved the court hours after the state government announced its inability to allow burial space on the Marina beach citing legal hurdles.

In a hearing before the first bench, comprising acting chief justice Huluvadi G Ramesh and Justice S S Sundar, the counsel for DMK questioned the government's legal ground for not allotting space for burying Karunanidhi at the Marina beach.
