Major Record Labels Agree on AI Protections in New Tentative Contract with SAG-AFTRA Union
Apr 15, 2024 4:48 AM

07:25 AM EDT, 04/15/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Major record labels including Warner Music Group ( WMG ) , Sony Music Entertainment (SONY) and Disney (DIS) Music Group have reached a tentative contract with the SAG-AFTRA union that includes protections against AI for media professionals, the union said Friday.

The agreement covers the period 2021 to 2026 and will be sent to member for ratification, SAG-AFTRA said.

Under the tentative contract, the union said that clear consent and compensation are required before a song is released using a digital replication of an artist's voice, which is usually made possible with generative AI. It added that the terms "artist," "singer" and "royalty artist" only refer to humans in the agreement.

"We are pleased to reach this agreement with SAG-AFTRA and continue our strong partnership as we enter this exciting and fast-moving new era for music and artists," the negotiating committee for record labels said in a statement.
