Malaysia minister says unclear why US tariff rate was increased, seeks to balance trade

KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 (Reuters) - Malaysia's Trade

Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said on Wednesday he did not know

why a U.S. tariff on Malaysia was increased from 24% to 25%,

adding his country was committed to balancing trade with

Washington.

Speaking at a press conference, he said Malaysia's offer to

the United States includes purchasing Boeing ( BA ) aircraft for

Malaysia Airlines and his country would improve enviornmental

protections and is encouraging cross-border data flows. He said

Malaysia would not compromise on issues of national sovereignty

and was prepared to defend "red lines".
