07:25 AM EDT, 05/20/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) unit decided against offering web publishers options regarding their data usage in the realm of its artificial intelligence-powered search features, Bloomberg News reported, citing an internal document.
The search giant drew a "hard red line" and would require all publishers who were seeking their content to show up in the search results to allow the content to be used to enhance AI functionalities, the news outlet reported.
Instead of giving options, the company opted to "silently update" its practices with "no public announcement" regarding the use of publishers' data, Bloomberg reported, citing the document, written by Chetna Bindra, a product management executive at Google Search.
"Do what we say, say what we do, but carefully," the document reportedly said.
Offering publishers a choice would make training AI models in search too complicated, Google ( GOOG ) said in the document, which was unveiled in the company's search antitrust trial, according to the report.
Google ( GOOG ) did not immediately respond to request for comment from MT Newswires.
