Market Chatter: Alphabet's Google Faces $314.6 Million Fine Over Cell Phone Data Lawsuit
Jul 2, 2025 4:41 AM

07:25 AM EDT, 07/02/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOG)'s Google ( GOOG ) must pay more than $314.6 million to Android smartphone users in California for allegedly misusing customers' cell phone data, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing a jury in San Jose.

The plaintiffs filed the class action in state court in 2019 on behalf of about 14 million Californians.

The jury agreed with the plaintiffs that Google ( GOOG ) was guilty of collecting information from idle devices without permission for its own uses like targeted advertising, according to the report.

Google ( GOOG ) told the court that no Android users were harmed by the data transfers and that users consented to them in their terms of service and privacy policies, Reuters said.

Google ( GOOG ) spokesperson Jose Castaneda said in an email to MT Newswires that the company will appeal, and that the verdict "misunderstands services that are critical to the security, performance, and reliability of Android devices."

A separate lawsuit filed in a federal court in San Jose with the same claims against Google ( GOOG ) on behalf of Android users in the other 49 states is scheduled for trial in April 2026, according to the report.
