Market Chatter: Alphabet's Google Fined $12.4 Million by Indonesia's Antitrust for Alleged Unfair Business Practices
Jan 21, 2025 8:47 AM

11:28 AM EST, 01/21/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) has been fined about 202 billion Indonesian rupiah ($12.4 million) by the country's antitrust agency for its alleged involvement in unfair business practices tied to its payment system services for Google Play Store, Reuters reported Tuesday.

The agency started a probe into the technology giant in 2022 amid potential abusing of its market position as it required app developers in Indonesia to use Google Pay Billing at higher rates than other payment systems or face removal from the Google Play Store, according to the report.

The payment systems lowered developers' earnings as they resulted in a drop in the number of users, Reuters reported, citing the hearing panel. The company had charged a fee of as much as 30% through Google Pay Billing, the panel reportedly said.

Alphabet didn't immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.

GOOG and GOOGL shares were up 1.3% in recent trading.
