Market Chatter: Alphabet's Google Will Soon be Forced to Give Android Users More Ways to Download Apps, US Judge Says
Aug 15, 2024 3:39 AM

06:23 AM EDT, 08/15/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) will no longer be able to avoid app store reforms, US District Judge James Donato in San Francisco said, as he plans to issue an order forcing the tech giant to give Android users more ways to download apps, Reuters reported Wednesday.

Donato said his ruling in the coming weeks will maximize users' and developers' flexibility to download and distribute apps outside the Play store, according to the report.

He further said that the injunction will be about three pages long and he will set up a three-person compliance and technical committee to implement and monitor the injunction, Reuters reported.

"Fortnite" maker Epic Games' lawsuit accused Google ( GOOG ) of monopolizing how consumers access apps on Android devices and has asked Donato to require Google ( GOOG ) to make it easier for Android users to download apps from third-party app stores, such as Epic's. It also wants the court to forbid Google ( GOOG ) from automatically installing its Play store on Android devices.

"Google ( GOOG ) foreclosed competition for years and years and years. We're opening the gate now and letting competitors come in," Donato said.

Google ( GOOG ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment on the matter.
