Market Chatter: Alphabet's Waymo Seeking Approval to Test Robotaxis in Manhattan
Jun 18, 2025 9:37 AM

12:26 PM EDT, 06/18/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOGL, GOOG) Waymo autonomous driving unit is seeking approval from New York City's Department of Transportation to test its robotaxis in Manhattan, Bloomberg reported Wednesday.

The vehicles will be accompanied by a trained human specialist supervising behind the wheel, the report said, citing Waymo spokesperson Ethan Teicher.

Regardless of whether Waymo receives a permit from the city's Department of Transportation, it plans to have a human driver manually operate its cars in New York to collect data, Teicher reportedly said in a statement to Bloomberg.

Waymo did not immediately respond to a request for a comment from MT Newswires.
