09:10 AM EDT, 06/12/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Amazon.com ( AMZN ) asked the Luxembourg-based General Court to scrap the European Commission's designation of the company as a "very large online platform" under the EU's Digital Services Act, Reuters reported Thursday, citing Robert Spano, an Amazon ( AMZN ) lawyer.
A company with a VLOP designation is required to do more to address illegal online content, among other things, according to the report.
Spano told the court that the VLOP rules "make no sense when applied to online marketplaces" like the Amazon Store, which don't pose systemic risks. VLOP rules also "do not and cannot rationally assist in preventing the dissemination of illegal or counterfeit goods," Spano said, according to the report.
A court ruling is expected in the coming months, Reuters reported.
The company didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
