Market Chatter: Amazon, Other Online Platforms to Be Held Liable for Unsafe Products in EU
Feb 3, 2025 5:04 AM

07:31 AM EST, 02/03/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Amazon.com ( AMZN ) , PDD Holdings ( PDD )-owned (PDD) Temu and other online shopping platforms will be held accountable in the EU for illegal or hazardous products sold online, the Financial Times reported Saturday, citing proposed customs reforms.

Under the draft proposal, e-commerce platforms would be required to submit customs information before goods arrive in the EU, shifting the role of importer to the platforms from consumers, according to the report.

Online retailers would also be required to collect the applicable duties and taxes, and ensure that the goods comply with EU requirements, the report said.

The draft also proposes eliminating duty exemptions for items under 150 euros ($154), consolidating customs data across member states, and establishing a centralized EU customs authority to strengthen oversight, the report added.

Amazon ( AMZN ), PDD Holdings ( PDD ), and the European Customs Authority did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
