11:18 AM EST, 01/23/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Apple ( AAPL ) , Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) and other smartphone makers face pressure from India over direct access to the government's suite of apps, Bloomberg News reported Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The country's technology ministry last month asked the companies to make the state-backed GOV.in app store available in their marketplaces and discussed the prospects of a policy mandate or using legal means for compliance, the report said.
Google ( GOOG ) pushed back on the initiative, and Apple ( AAPL ) probably won't agree to the move, the report said.
Google ( GOOG ) said it is engaged with the government to boost safeguards for the mobile environment, the report said.
Apple ( AAPL ) and the ministry didn't respond to requests for comment, Bloomberg said.
