Market Chatter: Apple's App Store Age Ratings Fail to Shield Children from Inappropriate Content, Group Says
Dec 23, 2024 12:52 PM

03:19 PM EST, 12/23/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Apple's ( AAPL ) App Store features hundreds of apps with inappropriate content despite being rated safe for children, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday, citing research by Heat Initiative and ParentsTogether Action.

In a 24-hour review, about 200 apps targeting kids included content promoting dieting, anonymous chats and suggestive games.

While Apple ( AAPL ) claims to review apps for compliance with age-rating guidelines, the process leaves developers to set ratings and faces criticism from parents and digital safety advocates, according to the report.

The Heat Initiative and ParentsTogether Action report called for independent expert reviews of app ratings as lawmakers introduce measures to hold platforms accountable for child safety, the report said.

Apple ( AAPL ) didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
