Market Chatter: AT&T Paid $380,000 Ransom to Delete Stolen Data, Hacker Claims
Jul 15, 2024 4:32 AM

07:06 AM EDT, 07/15/2024 (MT Newswires) -- AT&T ( T ) paid a hacker $380,000 to destroy data they had stolen from the company, Bloomberg reported Sunday, citing the hacker and an unnamed source who confirmed the successful extortion attempt.

Bloomberg said an analysis of the Bitcoin wallet address provided by the hacker appeared to confirm a transaction consistent with the payment in mid-May.

Bloomberg said the hack may have included six months of 2022 call and SMS logs, including location data, of nearly all of the company's wireless customers.

Bloomberg said the hacker also provided a seven-minute video purportedly destroying the data to show that they had fulfilled their part in the deal.

AT&T ( T ) did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.
