Market Chatter: BHP Faces Unresolved Issues With Union at Chilean Copper Mine
Jun 6, 2024 11:56 AM

02:35 PM EDT, 06/06/2024 (MT Newswires) -- BHP Group ( BHP ) management and union workers at Spence copper mine in Chile have settled some minor differences, but major issues remain unresolved, Bloomberg reported Thursday, citing Ronald Salcedo, head of the union.

The union represents over 1,100 workers at the mine, according to the report. Mediated talks started Wednesday and are expected to continue for the full five allotted working days, Salcedo told Bloomberg.

According to Chilean labor laws, if an agreement isn't reached by Tuesday, the workers have the option to either extend the mediated or initiate a strike the next day, according to the report.

BHP did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment. The union could not be reached.
