03:00 PM EDT, 03/19/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Boeing ( BA ) culture is more inclined towards mass production over safety standards, the head of the Federal Aviation Administration told NBC News Tuesday.
Describing a series of incidents like the January door plug blowout on 737 Max jetliner as a production failure, FAA chief Michael Whitaker said Boeing ( BA ) had no other choice than to meet the 90-day deadline by the agency to outline a plan to improve the safety of its planes.
"They need to make safe airplanes or they will be capped at a production level that's not sustainable," Whitaker told the news outlet.
There was no reason the company couldn't make a good airplane, Whitaker said.
Boeing ( BA ) did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
