07:38 AM EDT, 06/09/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Chevron ( CVX ) Chief Executive Mike Wirth warned workers about rising safety challenges and told them to reinforce precautionary measures weeks before the Angola platform fire, Reuters reported Monday, citing an internal company video sent by the CEO on April 29.
"We've seen a concerning increase in serious near-misses, especially over the last few weeks," Wirth was quoted as saying in the video. "Some of these events could have resulted in fatalities."
Three workers died after fire broke out at Chevron's ( CVX ) Benguela Belize Lobito Tomboco deepwater facility in Angola on May 20.
The company engages its workers to build and sustain a safety culture aimed at preventing high-consequence incidents, a Chevron ( CVX ) spokesperson told MT Newswires in an email Monday.
"Preventing fatalities and serious incidents is our top priority," the spokesperson said. "We aim to prevent fatalities, serious injuries and illnesses across our operations, and operate reliably."
