05:19 AM EDT, 07/31/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Chinese military-linked researchers used outputs from Microsoft ( MSFT )-backed (MSFT) OpenAI and Anthropic AI models to train domestic defense AI systems, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing a review of more than 80 Chinese academic papers and patents.

According to the report, researchers used model distillation, a technique that uses outputs from advanced AI models to train smaller, locally deployable systems, to develop AI models for military applications, including drone navigation, target recognition and cyber operations.

Anthropic, OpenAI did not respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
