09:30 AM EST, 01/17/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Chrystia Freeland announced that she will be running to be leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister of Canada, CTV News is reporting Friday
In a social media post, she said she is "running to fight for Canada," and will be officially launching her campaign on Sunday.
This comes after former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney officially kicked off his bid to replace Justin Trudeau on Thursday.
A source close to CTV News said Freeland, the former finance minister and deputy prime minister, will make scrapping the consumer carbon tax one of her campaign policy planks.
"She is ready to make difficult decisions to meet our emissions targets and make sure big polluters pay for their outsized emissions. But she will not fight Canadians on a policy, they have been clear, they do not support," the source told CTV News.
Freeland left Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's cabinet on Dec. 16, writing in her resignation letter that she disagreed with him on several policies.
