Market Chatter: CoreWeave's Expansion of Data Center in Texas to Double City's Power Demand
Jul 14, 2025 6:38 AM

09:18 AM EDT, 07/14/2025 (MT Newswires) -- CoreWeave's ( CRWV ) expansion of a data center in Denton, Texas, is expected to double the city's power needs, reflecting the growing strain AI data centers are putting on the US power grid, Bloomberg reported Monday.

The project, occupying a site developed by Core Scientific ( CORZ ) , will be used by OpenAI and could reach 390 megawatts of capacity, the report said.

The data center is consuming nearly all of Denton's remaining grid capacity, and potential additional transmission investments may be required to support the load, the report added, citing an e-mail written by a utility executive in January.

The Texas power grid may face shortfalls as early as next year as a result of increased consumption from data centers, oil and gas operations, and cryptocurrency mining, the report said, citing the Electric Reliability Council of Texas.

CoreWeave ( CRWV ) and Core Scientific ( CORZ ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires request for comment.
