05:44 PM EDT, 05/19/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The US Justice Department, including its criminal division, is investigating the circumstances surrounding the recent cyber attack on Coinbase Global ( COIN ) , in which hackers claimed they obtained certain information about certain Coinbase customer accounts, Bloomberg reported Monday, citing a source close to the matter.

The cryptocurrency exchange disclosed in a filing last week that the cyber attack could cost it about $180 million to $400 million in remediation expenses and voluntary customer reimbursements.

According to the company, the hackers demanded money in exchange for not releasing the information publicly. Coinbase added that it did not pay the hackers and is cooperating with authorities investigating the matter.

The DoJ is investigating the "criminal actors" and not Coinbase, a Coinbase spokesperson told MT Newswires in an email.

"We have notified and are working with the DOJ and other US and international law enforcement agencies and welcome law enforcement's pursuit of criminal charges against these bad actors," the spokesperson quoted Paul Grewal, the exchange's chief legal officer.

The DoJ didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
