03:20 PM EDT, 04/07/2025 (MT Newswires) -- European Commission officials are considering 25% tariffs on US goods sold within the bloc to counter President Donald Trump's import duties on steel and aluminum, Reuters reported Monday, citing a document it viewed.
The European tariffs would take effect for some goods on May 16, while the levies on other items will become effective on Dec. 1, the document said.
The proposed tariffs would apply to a wide group of goods - including diamonds, dental floss and soybeans - although an earlier threat to also tax the likes of dairy and bourbon was pulled after Trump threatened retaliatory tariffs as high as 200% on alcohol beverages produced in Europe, the report said.
European Commission did not immediately reply to a message from MT Newswires seeking comment.
