Market Chatter: Exxon Faces Further Backlash Over Climate Lawsuit as Norway's Oil Fund Joins Opposition
May 24, 2024 5:52 AM

08:15 AM EDT, 05/24/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Exxon Mobil ( XOM ) is facing a further backlash to its lawsuit against climate-focused shareholder groups as Norway's oil fund has said it will vote against the re-election of Jay Hooley, the oil giant's lead independent director, at the company's annual meeting, the Financial Times reported on Friday.

The lawsuit, aimed at blocking resolutions urging greenhouse gas emission cuts, has triggered fears of a broader attack on shareholder rights in the US, the report said.

The move by Norges Bank Investment Management follows a decision by Calpers, the largest US public pension plan, to vote against the re-election of all Exxon directors at the annual general meeting on May 29.

An Exxon Mobile spokesperson could not immediately be reached for comment.

May 9, 2022
The likelihood of exceeding 1.5°C for a short period has been rising since 2015, with scientists in 2020 estimating a 20 percent chance and revising that last year up to 40 percent. Even one year at 1.5°C of warming can have dire impacts, such as killing many of the world's coral reefs and shrinking Arctic sea ice cover.
