10:31 AM EST, 01/24/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Meta's (META) Facebook, Alphabet's (GOOGL, GOOG) Google ( GOOG ), and Snap (SNAP) are among companies being asked by the European Commission to participate in a test to see whether they're doing enough to fight disinformation ahead of next month's German election, Reuters reported Friday, quoting an EU spokesperson.
Microsoft ( MSFT ) and its LinkedIn unit, ByteDance-owned TikTok, Elon Musk's X and other social media companies have been asked to take part in a "stress test" to check if there are enough safeguards in place to mitigate risks on their platforms, as required by the EU's Digital Services Act, the report said.
EU spokesperson Thomas Regnier said the stress test will be done behind closed doors and represents a first for a national election following a similar test done before last year's European Parliament elections, according to the report.
Meta, Alphabet, Snap, and the European Commission didn't immediately respond to requests for comment by MT Newswires.
