07:22 AM EDT, 07/16/2024 (MT Newswires) -- General Motors' ( GM ) goal of producing 1 million all-electric vehicles in North America by the end of 2025 appears increasingly uncertain, CNBC reported late Monday, citing comments by CEO Mary Barra.
"We won't get to a million just because the market is not developing, but it will get there," Barra told CNBC, adding, "We're going to be guided by the customer."
GM aimed to achieve a production capacity of 1 million EVs in China and North America by 2025 but has since adjusted its expectations due to slower-than-anticipated market demand for electric vehicles.
A GM spokesperson clarified to CNBC that the company's target was production capacity, while the question was whether the company would actually produce 1 million EVs in 2025.
GM would no longer emphasize the specific EV production capacity targets for 2025, underscoring the company's strategy to remain adaptable in a fluctuating market, GM spokesperson added, according to CNBC.
General Motors ( GM ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
