12:10 PM EDT, 03/17/2026 (MT Newswires) -- General Motors ( GM ) and LG Energy Solution's joint venture, Ultium, will rehire about 700 workers who were temporarily laid off in January at its Tennessee facility, as the company looks to start production of lithium iron phosphate cells for stationary energy storage, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, citing Tom Gallagher, vice president of operations for Ultium.
The retooling of the Spring Hill, Tennessee, facility from nickel-based cells production to LFP cells is costing Ultium "tens of millions" of dollars, Gallagher said in an interview, adding that laid-off workers should be called back by the end of April.
General Motors ( GM ) and LG Energy Solution did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
