06:16 AM EDT, 06/11/2026 (MT Newswires) -- General Motors ( GM ) might abandon its previous strategy to use lower-cost, iron-based battery chemistry for upcoming electric vehicles, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing comments from the company's head of battery technology, Kurt Kelty.
The company previously disclosed plans to create lithium-iron phosphate batteries for models coming in the future at a combined manufacturing facility in Tennessee starting late next year, the report said.
General Motors ( GM ) is now shifting its attention to using a lithium manganese-rich technology instead, which offers comparable manufacturing costs in the US but provides higher energy storage capacity, Reuters quoted Kelty as saying.
The Tennessee factory will begin manufacturing LFP cells this month solely for energy storage configurations rather than automotive applications, the report said.
