06:50 AM EDT, 06/25/2025 (MT Newswires) -- General Motors' ( GM ) 6,500 employees at the San Luis Potos plant in central Mexico will vote this week on whether to join SINTTIA, an independent union, Bloomberg reported Wednesday.
According to Bloomberg, the plant has been without a union since 2023 after its previous union lost certification under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) trade deal and was replaced by a workers council managed by General Motors ( GM ).
Bloomberg added that SINTTIA, which won a similar vote at GM's Silao plant in 2022 and secured a 10% wage increase there, is competing against rival union Carlos Leone.
If SINTTIA wins, it would strengthen efforts to raise wages and improve working conditions ahead of the USMCA trade agreement update next year, Bloomberg noted.
The San Luis Potos plant produces GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Equinox sport utility vehicles.
General Motors ( GM ) did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.
