Market Chatter: Goldman Sachs Exploring Potential Acquisitions
Jul 22, 2025 12:17 PM

02:48 PM EDT, 07/22/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Goldman Sachs Group ( GS ) Chief Executive David Solomon held discussions to acquire $25 billion Northern Trust ( NTRS ) earlier this year and nearly completed a deal to take over Cliffwater for $6 billion, Semafor reported late Monday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Advanced talks with Cliffwater, a money manager overseeing $120 billion in assets, stalled due to disagreements over price, some of the people reportedly said.

Talks with Northern Trust ( NTRS ) could intensify as the company is now in play, according to the report.

Goldman Sachs ( GS ) declined to comment while Cliffwater and Northern Trust ( NTRS ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment on Tuesday.
