Market Chatter: Google Ad Tech Unlikely to be Severed From Alphabet by EU Regulators
Sep 13, 2024 12:26 PM

02:28 PM EDT, 09/13/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The European Commission is weighing whether to require Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) to end its anti-competitive practices in its ad tech business but is unlikely to order a breakup as previously cautioned, Reuters reported Friday, citing people with direct knowledge of the matter.

The regulators are set to take a call in the coming months after antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager last year threatened to break up Google's ( GOOG ) ad tech unit. Though the decision might not be finalized before her term ends in November, the report added.

Authorities are unlikely to issue a breakup order because of the complexity involved, although a breakup order could come at a later point should Google ( GOOG ) persist in engaging in anti-competitive activities, the people were quoted as saying.

Google ( GOOG ) and the European Commission didn't immediately reply to MT Newswires' requests for comment.
