Market Chatter: Google Faces EU Antitrust Complaint From Publishers Over AI Overviews
Jul 7, 2025 4:56 AM

07:32 AM EDT, 07/07/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) is facing an EU antitrust compliant from a group of independent publishers who claim the search engine's AI Overviews feature is causing a significant loss in their traffic and readership, Reuters reported on Friday, citing a document.

"Google's ( GOOG ) core search engine service is misusing web content for Google's ( GOOG ) AI Overviews in Google Search, which have caused, and continue to cause, significant harm to publishers, including news publishers in the form of traffic, readership and revenue loss," the Independent Publishers Alliance said in the document, according to Reuters.

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear above traditional hyperlinks in Google ( GOOG ) search results. The complaint alleges that these summaries are generated using publisher material and that Google's ( GOOG ) positioning disadvantages publishers' original content.

Google ( GOOG ) said in a statement to MT Newswires that "sites can gain and lose traffic for a variety of reasons, including seasonal demand, interests of users, and regular algorithmic updates to Search. We're focused on building a product that users want to use and is helpful, and by doing so, that's how we can continue to send traffic to the web."

The European Commission confirmed to MT Newswires that it has received the complaint but declined to comment.
