Market Chatter: Google Search Antitrust Probe Faces Pressure From EU Publishers, Tech Firms
Mar 16, 2026 7:32 AM

09:48 AM EDT, 03/16/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) unit is at the center of calls from European publishers, tech firms and startups urging EU regulators to wrap up a nearly two-year investigation and impose a fine on Google ( GOOG ), Reuters reported Monday.

Groups including the European Publishers Council, whose members include News Corp ( NWSA ) , Axel Springer and Conde Nast, asked the European Commission in a letter to finish the probe next week, warning that delays risk undermining the Commission's credibility and harming European companies' ability to invest and grow, the report said.

The organizations also urged regulators to adopt a formal non-compliance decision against Alphabet, including a cease-and-desist order and a deterrent fine, the Reuters report said.

A European Commission spokesperson confirmed receiving the letter and told MT Newswires that the Commission aims to conclude the investigation as quickly as possible. The Commission opened the investigation in March 2024 to look into Google's ( GOOG ) alleged favoritism of its own services in online search.
